[RFC|Merged] Allow Integration With Main Web Site

Post by Pony99CA »

As mentioned in the Various usability improvements topic (and requested several times on phpbb.com; for example, the Link back to Main Site and phpBB without mods topics), phpBB should not think of itself as the entire site; there should be some way to navigate back to a site's home page (at least).

I suggest adding a Home page entry field on the Board settings ACP page. If a URL were entered there, two things would change:
  • A Site home link would be added to the breadcrumb list ahead of the Board index link.
  • The board's logo would link to the Web site's home page instead of the Board Index.
You could also add a Site name field to the ACP and the Site home breadcrumb (and maybe the logo's ALT text) would have that text displayed.

If nothing were entered in the Home page entry field, phpBB would behave as it does today.

Just that simple change would acknowledge that many boards coexist with other pages and aren't stand-alone forums. This would be simpler for people who don't need (or want) a Portal MOD (although Portal MODs could also use this, making the portal page the home page).

I've always wondered why we never did this ... I presume I was brain dead.

Sounds like a good idea, is a ticket open for this (I can probably make PR for this tonight if a ticket is made)?

Proposal seems reasonable.

I thought there was already a site name in the templates, perhaps that should be changed (rather than another site name added).

The site name refers to the title of the forum. While this would be the website the forum is a part of, so an admin should be able to use separate values for these.

On the proposal +1 we should absolutely have this.

@EXreaction As no ticket is linked here I would assume there isn't one yet. Would be awesome if you can implement this!

Correct, I did not open a ticket. If someone planned to implement this, I figured they would write the ticket.

UPDATE: I see that EX wrote one as I was posting. :D
