It seems just simply a matter of the wrong file getting copied over. It happens. We always suggest making backups before doing updates or installing MODs. Just be sure to transfer files over carefully, paying attention to which file is in which folder. It's OK! You can do it.

And you are correct that a .02 to .04 was not available, and you proceeded to do .02 to .03, .03 to .04 exactly as you should have.

if you do not have any MODs installed, then there is no reason to update from one version to the next like that.
( if you do have MODs installed then yes, update one version at a time.



with no MODs installed;
1. download the current latest version ( 3.0.4 for now )
2. unzip it to your computer
3. take the blank config.php file out of it
4. upload all the rest of the files and folders to your server letting
them overwrite the ones that are there.
5. in your browser, go to:
yourdomain.com/yourphpbb/install/database_update.php
6. delete the install folder
7. you are done.
