Also the size had dropped quite a bit.

I think that was so they only had versions with the new captcha available and also some font files were removed.

I still believe that the image and response will ultimately be harder for bot to decode and yet easier for humans. I believe this for all the reasons I stated previously in this thread

I also have a hard time believing that board admins are too lazy or dumb to up load an image and set a response. But then I don't sit at the help desk for phpbb so I don't have the benefit of that insight.
There are quite a few board admins who I think really would not know to spend the time to put in those answers.
Usually, if you find someone willing to spend a little time to make registration for spambots difficult, they might be willing to install a small MOD as well.
I think that’s the best solution for everyone... but if any of the "alternatives" were used as a default, then they would all break easily too... it’s uniqueness that will win the war.

It’s a tough battle, but interestingly enough, the CAPTCHA seems to be the hot topic around phpBB3 right now... (even more than the bike-shed-Quick reply was ever discussed) everyone seems to be trying to come up with a workable solution that is different from the CAPTCHA.

the idea that board admins "will not want or will not know how" to create challenge/response is bogus at best.
every board admin spends some time preparing their board. every single one of them creates several different forums, with forum name and forum description, creates an admin account complete with password, fills in his/her email address, names the board, fills in description for the board.
these are the absolute minimal steps, without creating categories, without creating subforums, and without defining permissions, user groups, moderators etc.
it is ridiculous to suggest that someone who did all this will suddenly not be able to define a challenge question together with its response.
we can argue how effective this approach is, but i think it will be foolhardy to assume that "ok, every captcha we had so far was cracked, but the next one will be unbreakable".
the reasonable assumption should be that every new captcha will be broken sooner or later, to the point that humans will not be able to decipher them.
i don't say that the Q/A thing is bulletproof, but, imo, it has better chances of actually blocking spam than captcha does.

pls don't include Q&A as default - i will better include it with a mod (or even as a kind of "must-fill-in-field" by registration) - then its more unique and no first target for bots.

phpBB operates on firstly UTC dates, and seconly GB dates.

2007-06-12 - UTC
12/06/2007 - GB/AU/NZ/...

But I have default date format on here and it's 12 May 2007 which is close but different.

I saw this topic locked for a moment and it made me think RC1 was released. Guess Smithy just checked the lock topic option by accident =[

I kinda expected this reply...
Oh well, how can we expect people who still use inches and feet to have a rational ordering of dates? :P
Well, it is now 00:pm05/12.2007/12 here (guess the format), so have a nice day.

PS: where has your lion avatar gone? :(
