Mapping the human genome is VERY different to knowing what the pieces do.

Yeah sorry I didn't look at the question properly, I'm not sure how much good coming up with these new molcules is though. I have a bit of chemistry qualifications from college and I know creating these things artificially is very difficult. But I agree research is vital , the human evolutionary chain has already been stopped by medicine and we have to look into these things. I think that Italian moron who wants to clone a human is jumping the gun a bit, although if you've heard him talk on the subject he's a buffoon. He just wants his name in history, there are many in this field vastly superior to him and all could clone humans, but they are not ready and they know it.

A weekend wasted is never a wasted weekend.
My vote goes to cancer research because my mom died of lung cancer 3 years ago...

Hmmm, yeah, but now finn's post is making me think...the genome project already has a lot of support, and will take forever to complete anyway...but...Everyone here will at some time be affected in some way by cancer, whether it is them, a freind, or a relative who directly suffers from it. It is, in fact, pretty likely that someone reading this now will eventually be killed by cancer. This is a chance for us to contribute to something that is killing people here and now, not 50, 100, even 1000 years into the future. Don't look so far into the future that you forget the present.
Just my 2 pence.
