If phpBB2 would not have been free I would probably have never gotten into PHP/MySQL development because I would have never used it. And then of course I would never have written mods for it (like my popular mod; Anti-Spam ACP).

I'd pay if the license was for unlimited sites. I.e. the license attached to me, and I could set up as many sites as I wanted.
If the license was per site, I would go and seek out other open source.

Folks, it is a moot point.
phpBB is open source; that's a given, based on the conviction of all team members. Open Source means much more than the "free of charge" offered in the past (and present) by some other BB projects. Open Source really means "free" and we wouldn't have it any other way. That spirit allowed us to include much GPL code in phpBB3.

Yes. Free is free in deed unlike what SMF has for their users, which supposely is free too.

To answer your question, I put a price tag between $50 - $80; nothing more or less. In my opinion, many commercial forum packages like vBulletin or IP.Board are insanely priced. Why should I pay about $180 for a script when with the same money I can purchase some other more advanced and powerful software like Microsoft Office?
Scripts are most of the time overpriced, but anyway...

Microsoft Office = 100,000,000 users + these users are now bound to Microsoft
VB/IPB = 100,000 users to be generous
(This is the reason for the cost, of course you can decide whether or not the product is worth the cost, and act accordingly.)

kellanved makes a good point that most people are failing to grasp.
phpBB is released under the GNU GPL license... the developers are more than entitled to charge for distribution of phpBB. They can charge through the nose if they like.
But there would be nothing stopping you and I from turning around and redistributing it for a lot less.
This is more than just "open source"... the vast majority of php software, unless run through a compiler, or otherwise obfuscated, is by necessity "open source", but that doesn't mean it is released under a strict rights-maintaining license like the GPL. Comparing this, even if the phpBB Group were charging, to scripts like SMF would be unfair.
I personally think they should consider commercialising more aspects of phpBB... or at least be less restrictive on preventing mod authors from charging or providing intermediary links for download on the phpBB site... as long as all mods are GPLed (which, of course, they legally must be). The great thing about the GPL is the freedom we all have to run with the software and modify it to our own needs, and then build a reputation , or even a livelihood from that. This ensures that there is always a universe of phpbb-o-philes around the core phpBB script. This is a much bigger freedom than the initial price phpBB choose to distribute the software for.
