Still wondering why some things haven't happened...

Post by bc3tech »

I'm just wondering why this community package hasn't done the following to remain comparable to some of the more feature-filled alternatives...
  • "Subscribe" to a thread w/o having to receive an e-mail about every single reply. or receive e-mails only daily or weekly. this would be an invaluable feature to a new phpbb release IMO.
  • Get rid of the after-post intermediate page. That thing is annoying and un-needed IMO (as a web-based content management developer)
  • use some AJAX... so much cleaner, especially if/when a quick reply feature is implemented

Well, there won't be a quick reply built into phpBB, so in that regards, this point in moot......

Partially because the devs don't rate phpBB based on what other forum software includes. They put in the features that they feel are important, and those that you mention were not felt to be important enough at the time of the feature freeze to justify inclusion.
You can never go home again... but I guess you can shop there.

The development team decide what featureset they want to impliment. This project is run as benevolent dictator from a users point of view. I am sure from a team point of view its consensus community.

What do I mean by that...we the users trust the development team to move phpBB forward. We do not get a direct say it feature set. We may get some input but we do not have decision making power. Within the team I am sure they decide by consenus and not just one person.

Statements like use AJAX are pretty useless. It just a technology set. If you have a area (other than the never to be done QR) where that combination of technologies would be suited maybe post with some clearer examples.

We all have wishes for the core set ... but we have to be happy with what we get or fork the codebase and if you feel your needs are really not being met.

You don't.
You only get one email regardless of whether 1 person or 10 has replied. You do however get an email notifying you of new replies again after you've visited the thread.

Your subscription page:
search.php?search_id=egosearch

Though I would also like to see the subscriptions be setup like VB's, but this works good enough...

phpBB3 was feature locked long before anyone ever used the word AJAX or put that kind of programming into websites.
