Dars, There is a painfully simple solution to all this without the need to disable Javascript.
Firefox + Adblock (if you really feel you need it)

Javascript won't stop all ads.
Adblock will.
IE won't block Popups.
Firefox will.

I have never experienced a script resize my Firefox window. (save for popups)
But the FF popup blocker is extremely effective.
But if you feel you need the extra blocking power, I would get Adblock... it will block all the ads you want without disabling the ability to view pages because you have javascript turned off.
Even Wii uses javascript... we recently tested it on our AJAX chatbox.

Lieutenant, with javascript, you can insert text into the IE status bar.
I know using Firefox, we are not accustomed to seeing this happen, but if you browse around with IE for a while, you might happen upon a site that does that.

Also, so long as you stay away from illegal or borderline illegal sites (warez, porn, Torrent sites etc), javascript abuse is extremely minimal.

I'm not surfing illegal sites.
I'm not even complaining about JavaScript!

I just had Noscript block JS on this site, because i reinstalled FF and did not allow it.
Therefor i saw no message appears if JS is disabled.
I just wondered why, because its not a big deal.

You also give "alt-tags" on images even nowadays images load most the time, so why would you?
Because you care about 1% text-browsers? Because care about that another 1% who is blind?

The "alt" attribute is required for XHTML validation.
It's useful for not only those on text-browsers, but those who are still on dial-up, which actually is still a fair percentage of web user population.
Text-browsers (PDA, phone etc) is even less than half of a percent of internet user population. But I believe this will increase now with items such as the iPhone being released... many webmasters are going to have to start looking at creating stylesheets for those users... but I think we are still at least a year away.

Unfortunately, this topic has gone from a question to flaming.
FYI, Lieutenant, I have built a page in Javascript.
Javascript is not a bad thing... I just used the noscript tags and said to turn on your javascript for this page to display properly.
It doesn't bug me if people have javascript turned off... Javascript is not for everybody browsing the web, and I must respect that and plan accordingly... It's so easy to put a little messages that says turn it on.
Javascript can be a ton of fun to build with because of all the cool things it can do... but it can also slow down a browser, so I use it sparingly... unless I want to do something really cool

I was hoping to find the magical reason why (seemingly) so many people disable javascript, but since there is no logical reason why they do, I don't feel so bad about using whatever javascript I like. If they want to miss out on half the web, thats their choice.

Well, that's a little misleading. First of all, mobile devices and the people using them aren't "text-browsers." Second, the number of people using mobile devices to access the Internet, while relatively small, is above 1% at most major sites.

You should also factor in that a site would be visted less by a single mobile device user, than a single computer user (page hits).
