memberlist vs viewonline

I am just curious why the viewonline code was never migrated over to be part of memberlist.php?

It seems to me the similarities between these files would make for an easy compilation of code. It has been since years ago when the group control panel list of users in their groups was migrated over to the memberlist file...

Why or how was the viewonline code never merged as well?

Also, I got to thinking about how viewforum.php works compared to search.php...

Technically viewforum is just a watered down search.php... If search.php was passed the necessary parameters that viewforum is (how to sort posts, etc...) viewforum could essentially be migrated to search.php, or eliminated completely also?

I guess for the interest of debate and general phpBB discussion, I am curious if these ideas had ever came up in the development process, and if so why these alternative directions weren't taken? :)

I would imagine that if you regard viewforum as being a streamlined search rather than a "watered down" one, you'd be close to why it is seperate.

Viewforum is one of the most-hit pages on your forum, keep it as lean as possible.
