VERY strange behavior from a long time EM user.

Want to share what MODs you've gotten to work with EM? Happy about all the time your're saving? Want to say "thanks"? Here's the place.

DO NOT give out any FTP passwords to anyone! There is no reason to do so! If you need help badly enough, create a temporary FTP account that is restricted to only the files that you need help with and give the information for that. Giving out FTP information can be very dangerous!

VERY strange behavior from a long time EM user.

Post by taifunbrowser »

My situation:

over the past few days, I have in relatively quick succession added 10 mods to my forum.

My method: Install the mod first on my localhosted private board, when no bad results are found, install on the site one.

No problems there.

I waited for an hour after each installation, waiting for user comments. Then, after the mod "Last Visited", though it worked fine, all the buttons in posting.php no longer did anything. Their bbcodes still worked, but, forexample, you could not select text, then click a button, and expect it to automatically put the bbtags there.

That was a bad sign for me.

I went to my acp, and went to the most recently installed, and selected "restore backups". It says it completed fine. I go back, still no capabilities (crap.)

So I restore the backups of the next one down: "Post is sending mod". Innocent enough, but it did the trick.

Now, I'm trying to reinstall "last visited" mod, and I get this:

Code: Select all

Critical Error

FIND FAILED: In file [templates/subSilver/profile_add_body.tpl] could not find:

<td class="row1"><span class="gen">{L_SIGNATURE}:</span><br /><span class="gensmall">{L_SIGNATURE_EXPLAIN}<br /><br />{HTML_STATUS}<br />{BBCODE_STATUS}<br />{SMILIES_STATUS}</span></td>

MOD script line #115 :: FAQ :: Report
That did NOT happen the first time.

I.E. Can I be assured that the "restore backups" option really just copys the files back? then why shouldnt this have worked!?

something is fishy here. does anyone see it?

A summary for those annoyed by long posts: The easy mod "restore backups" capability made my forum different than before I installed the mod, which is the opposite of what it should do.

phail, you do have a right to complain but you should understand that these forums are frequented mostly by people needing help, not by people willing to volunteer their time to help others. I help as many people as I can, usually meaning that I help everyone who frequents these forums. But since I have been sick for many years and some periods are worse than others, I can't always be here to help. I do the best that I can. Hopefully after you receive some help, you will be willing to return to offer some advice to others in return...

Short of being willing to do that, you shouldn't get upset if others are equally unwilling to help whenever needed. If you can't/won't return to help others, be satisfied for whatever assistance that you receive and if you get none, remember that you too probably wouldn't be willing to help either...

Instead of getting angry, return the favor whenever you receive help. The more who are willing to do that, the less time anyone will have to wait for assistance here or in any other tech forum. The forums are only as good as the volunteers who frequent it. So would you be willing to volunteer your time to help others here in this community???

You also might note that you posted this in the wrong forum. The Installing MODs with EasyMOD forum would be the more appropriate forum for MOD installation problems when using EM. Your post has a much better chance of being seen if it is submitted to the most appropriate forum...

Well even though I'm sure you actually believe this statement, it is absolutely false. EM creates backups of all files that it modifies. If you restore the EM backups, it restores the backups of the files that it modified. So your board will be nearly identical to what it was before the MOD was installed. The reason I say nearly is because EM will not undo Database modifications and it will not delete included MOD files. So if you want to completely remove a MOD, then you would have to manually delete any included MOD files from your FTP Server and you would have to undo the database changes in phpMyAdmin...

My copy of the Last visit MOD, version 1.2.10em, does not modify the profile_add_body.tpl file. So do you have a link to the MOD topic and/or download???
