Re: Subforums are spiffy
"Fora" is the plural of forum, in the meaning of Forum Romanum, while "forums" is the correct plural if we are talking about a bulletin board. (If we are talking about linguistics: "bulletin" originates from French.)

Who said... do u say opera/opere? tifoso/tifosi? spaghetto/spaghetti? bravo/bravi?
BTW, in Italy the rule is that foreign word are not declined. So
1 leader, 2 leader
1 euro, 2 euro (and this has been estabilished also by the EU, after a 3-year discussion...)
1 bus, 2 bus
1 forum, 2 forum
etc.
If you ever cared...

Nobody's posted here for a bit. I'd like to see this language lesson continue.
How about importing the grammar of the language from where the word originated?
If the language of the imported word doesn't use articles, should we use an article when using that word in an English sentence?
And to stay on topic, I think subforums/subfora/subfori are all spiffy, too.
Where does the word "spiffy" come from?
.
Not TGIF. Not TGIM. It's TGI "ECT". And it's pronounced "ekt".

I think once foreign words are imported in another language, the rules of the latter should apply; we can't keep trace of 100 different grammar or pronunciation sets of rules just because we take words from 100 languages.
BTW: do you pronounce "privacy" like "ee" or like "I"?
But this is a semi-serious chit-chat discussion, not a test one...
Where does the word "spiffy" come from?
Yes, and what does it mean?
(Not from latin, I suppose.)
Re: Subforums are spiffy
I did a search and it seems “spiffy” is a very popular word with you folks on these forums.
And from something under the heading of “Hacker Slang”.
spiff•y (spĭf'ē)
adj., -i•er, -i•est.
Smart in appearance or dress; stylish.
tr.v., -ied, -y•ing, -ies.
To make attractive, stylish, or up-to-date: spiffying up my wardrobe.
[Possibly from dialectal spiff, dandified.]
spiffily spiff'i•ly adv. spiffiness spiff'i•ness n.
And from something under the heading of “Hacker Slang”.
spiffy
1. Said of programs having a pretty, clever, or exceptionally well-designed interface. “Have you seen the spiffy X version of empire yet?”
2. Said sarcastically of a program that is perceived to have little more than a flashy interface going for it. Which meaning should be drawn depends delicately on tone of voice and context. This word was common mainstream slang during the 1940s, in a sense close to 1.
Not TGIF. Not TGIM. It's TGI "ECT". And it's pronounced "ekt".
