Branch forum structure

Post by theexcogitator »

Is there an option some where that allows individuals to respond to individual responses - for example - see the branching structure : http://slashdot.org/articles/06/12/24/0452253.shtml

If it does not, would any one like this functionality. Should I write a modification that allows this or is there already one?

From what I am aware, this structure is the only one for reading posts. To reply to individuals, use the quote button, and their post will be quoted when you reply.

If you do make it as a MOD, I'm sure people will use it :)

It's not a phpBB3 feature.
But I have seen that feature on some obscure forum software packages, but I (personally) find it useless, and cumbersome, (just my opinion) but if you make it a MOD, I'm sure there might be some Admins out there that would like that feature. :)

afaik vBulletin supports it. no one uses it though, after a while you get confused, and afaik it uses way more resources then a topic based way. but then, it depends on how it is used..

imo this way should be used for news systems only

for those who do not understand:
threaded is a topic INSIDE a topic. example:
we have Frits, Henk, and Peter:

Code: Select all

Frits:
I think threaded is useless..
 -> Henk:
     Your argument is total crap
 -> Frits:
     Who cares?
Peter:
No, this gives people a chance to keep personal discussions to themselves
 -> Frits:
     true
     -> Henk:
         and it gives people who feel they need to answer with dumb answers like 'true' only to give their oppinions without going offtopic to much
there are of course more ways to describe it, but that's the way it would look. see it as sub-forums inside a topic. personally I think of this like hell..

One of my users keeps asking me to change to a forum with a threaded view... I keep laughing at him :)

It's rarely useful, but I've seen forums where it's useful. The usefulness depends on the user's ability to use it correctly. :P
Don't give me my freedom out of pity!
