Olympus as School Forum - some feature thoughts

Post by houser »

Dear all,

Some thoughts on using phpbb as a school forum, but I am sure most of it is relevant for any
larger installation with many forums and groups:

I run a cluster of 7 phpbb2 school forums, each with six classes that I hope to merge into one large phpbb3 forum this summer.

Question1/feature request:
I was wondering if there is a way to have some User groups be hierarchical and
relative to other groups?

Could the user groups be managed so that:
When you register, you only see the 40 or so main class groups.
when you then become a member of one of the class user group, you would see the 12-20
sub-user groups that are within the class?
In short, the usergroupslist would get too large and confusing as it is now
as each forum has six classes, each with 12-20 usergroups within the class.
We would get a list of 300-400 groups
and make it very hard for users to find their groups.
Especially as the names need to be generic until there is a way for yearly auto-renaming of groups or forums, see below.

Question2/feature request:
A "template-set" for each class when a new year begins...
a script that creates:
a number of forums with certain privileges
a number of usergroups that match those privileges.
Create a set of start documents in each and every forum.

Ideally and perhaps the most obvious way to implement, would be a "template-set" that looks
and behaves like a real forum, within the forum, not visible to users and then just a command that creates such a new set of forums and groups.

Question3/feature request:
Could such a "template-set" be renamed automatically each year to reflect a change in the name of the class?

I have been looking for mods for phpbb2 that does these things, with no such luck.
Greatful for any feedback on how you guys plan to manage this in Olympus, if at all.

This is of course all do-able manually ( I do it and my eyes hurt ,-) and with some sql/textedit-wizardry but is extremely time consuming and a bit dangerous if you do make mistakes.
It seems the sort of thing that was made for the software to do.

Thanx for listening!

peace
Janne A.

Olympus is feature locked and has been for some time.

You would have to do a MOD request after the final gold version is out.

Hello Kevin,

I am ofcourse aware of that.
I just wanted to put some ideas for the future out there, for whatever timeframe and version that it might apply to.
Have I posted in the wrong place?

peace

When they're open for suggestions on the next version they'll let us know. However, they sound quite specialised so I would think a MOD request post-gold would be the way to go.

Allright,

Thanx for the heads-up.
Appreciate it!
Oh, and BTW, I don't suppose any of this is built in anyway, even if I can't
fin these features in my beta, test install?

all the best
