are the confirmation pages really necessary?

Hey there, I want to ask about the following pages, are they really needed?

Instead of showing those following messages

can't the forum just take me to the admin panel right away (once I put the password)

or can't the forum take me to the thread that I just answered right away without telling me that my message has been submitted successfully?

The first (going straight to the admin panel) makes sense to me.

The second is a choice, not a notification. You can choose to view your message (occasionally useful when you want to reply immediately) or choose to return to the forum you were posting to. (phpBB2 currently operates in this fashion...)

If you don't like it, you'll be able to change it. That's the beauty of opensource software.

I recall this being something to do with the session management (or was it search indexing?) in phpBB2 - I don't know if this is still the case.

I'm quite agree with these ideas :). At least an option to choose what has to append .

I agree. Only real choices (wanna delete? yes/no) or errors should be shown; the rest is basically a waste of time and should be at most optional.

Here's (one of) the previous time(s) this was discussed: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=21764&hilit=confirmation+page%2A

Best reason I got from there to have confirmation pages: to stop people from accidentally creating a double post by hitting reload on the page that follows the post action (which is a lot more likely if that page is a topic or forum overview then if it's just a confirmation page).

I honestly don't mind the confirmation pages... most systems do that for a thing such as posting on a forum.
But as in phpBB2, there was a MOD that removed all confirmation pages... perhaps we'll see something like that MODed for phpBB3? maybe...

But also, many of the confirmations offer you a choice...
Go back to last page, go to new topic, go to topic last visited, go to last forum, go to index, etc...

well,, it's true that many offer an option, but the thing that i think is pointless is the admin password confirm page,,, i think it should just go to the ACP
