The upgrade script will probably work providing the existing 2.0 database structure has not been changed (attachment mod excepted I'd imagine) though all modifications will be lost.

I have to strongly recommend that you update from 2.0.17, as there are numerous security updates in the latest releases.
As for which versions are supported, latest stable at the time will be supported and any releases before that which didn't have relevant database changes, but there will likely be a finite cut-off point wherein you would need to update to a later 2.0.x release for it to work
