phpBB development has so far focused for the most part on a MODable solid core product with a good selection of widely used features. I don't get the impression that that philosophy is going to change any time soon, but I could be wrong about that. To go down the road of lots of (toggled) features would mean a major revision in phpBB's development, and it seems to me that there's no need for phpBB to go there, with the feature rich products already available. phpBB fills a spot where there's lots of room to work.

If phpBB3 stays light, it can work on more systems than other comparable software. I say keep it light, and let Admins install MODs if their choosing.
Afterall, the decision is ultimately the Devs.

It depends upon the coding, are we using fully CSS board where it loads faster, so adding such small features wont make the board to heavy hahahaha.

then everything can be added as a mod, these type of feature would be used by everyone at some point. many say only few use nope , either you would use some stats to see your page visitors.

I'm not sure I'm following what you're saying, but if I had a dime for every time somebody said something like, "You can just make it an on/off in the ACP," I could take the enitre phpBB community out to lunch .

People who make the "toggled feature" suggestion are almost always thinking of just their pet feature, it seems like, not of the dozens of pet features community wide. It's not "just one more feature, what's the problem?" It's "just one more feature" times the number of suggestions. I'd hate to be the lead developer for a "kitchen sink" phpBB, and if people think the ACP is complicated now…

AJAX is a technology allowing certain awesomely cool features to be implemented in web software. Can't say more, I might be shot AND sent to the Russian front.

AJAX has magical powers. According to everyone it makes everything better. Solves all of life's problems. I once saw an AJAX interface change a car tyre. Now that was impressive. It did it without any refreshing too. Saved valuable milliseconds with only a large increase in coding complexity too

of course the number of queries don't matter

and true- just let Admins install MODs they think they need. for one a requested feature is needed, for another it's trash and uncalled load on the server.

still- if one would take the time of actually learning PHP/MySQL- admins maybe could call themselves real webmasters nowadays. ( it escapes me for some reason, one installs a phpBB board and instantly thinks he/she is a webmaster? ;x )

then there is no need to add many features in PHPBB 3 corresponding to PHPBB2 , let the admins itself do it, we need to compete with major boards like VB and IPB. we are powerfull only because we are opensource, people will not look into if we become paid (which is not having a chance, accordingly by me ).

so just room around and think where we stand, the answer is

1. too many bugs

2. Heck of mods for all neccessary features to be added.

3. Finally how much secure are we????????????
