Print view

Post by friendly-art »

There is a "print view" link available now in each thread that produces a clean page suitable for printing. As the new table-free style will come with the official release of Olympus it will be possible to specify different CSS for screen and printer which will make "print view" unneeded. Will this "print view" link go away (otherwise confusing search engines by duplicate content)?

Print view will stay, it can be turned off for bots (= invisible for search engines).

I'm not sure of that :P
IIRC, a phpBB Team member said some times ago that the new style is NOT table-free.

There's actually no need in print view. Why do you think it will stay?

It is a non-tabular design, using the full semantical power of XHTML (no tables for posts for instance), while being compatible with all browsers back to at least IE 5.5. All style information is in the stylesheet, where it belongs. And added to this, it looks fantastic.

It's not table free, it's table appropriate. It uses tables where the data is tabular (ie, I would guess the memberlist).

It doesn't use them where styling is more appropriate (ie, layout).

You forget there's this web browser called "Internet Explorer", which doesn't know what to do with alternate CSS even if you shoved it where the sun doesn't shine. ;)

A browser called "Internet Explorer" deals with media="print" pretty well...

CSS isn't always fully supported.
