It wasn't a racist slag, it was simply an acknowledgement that the joke was very regional in flavour. If you weren't British you probably hadn't been exposed to the pop culture reference from which the joke was taken and thus would not likly be able to appreciate the humor.

Over here in Canada, for instance, we all know what being "screeched" means, but we don't expect people from across the pond to know. It's not a racist thing, it's just a private joke.
