Re: Visual Confirmation
It should work on Win95 as I'm almost sure I used it on that OS (just can't remember where and when ).
Don't give me my freedom out of pity!

My friend won't be happy about that... What build is it? (Link)Cap'n Refsmmat wrote: As of one of the nightly builds about a month ago (not a stable release, a nightly), Win98 is not supported at all.

There is no bit reason to not be using Windows XP or 2000, to be entirely honest. They're far more stable than 98/95, and compatability mode gets a lot of old software working - failing that, VMWare or similar will do the job...

Even so, it's like asking for trouble to ignore user minorities.
I'm still bleeding from the rage early Mozilla adopters had over the fact that subSilver's textarea bells and whistles didn't work in their browser. It didn't matter a lick that there were 999 happy IE users to their 1 disgruntled users.

Re: Off-topic Firefox OS Support
It's Firefox trunk builds that have killed Win9x support (also WinME and NT4). Firefox trunk, recently gaining the perpetual codename of "Minefield" is based upon Gecko 1.9 and changes the graphics toolkit from the platform specific mess that was GDI+/GTK/whatever-OSX-uses to Cairo, the opensource graphic engine which allows acceleration via OpenGL.
This change will not only vastly improve Gecko's (and by extension Firefox and SeaMonkey) ability to handle SVG, but also improcve general HTML rendering couple with advanced CSS3 features such as the HSLA & RBGA colour models, to anti aliased border corners:
Screenshot by me.
The thing to bear in mind that this work on Firefox trunk is what shall become Firefox 3 and not going to see the light of day till 2007. Windows '98 would be over a decade old and EOLed. Even Windows ME would be EOLed by the 2007 timeframe.
To move forwards sometimes you have to break backwards compatibility, Mozilla is doing just this with Firefox 3 with the Cairo graphic toolkit. phpBB did this with the move from phpB2.0.x from phpBB1.x.x. phpBB will be doing this again with phpBB3.

In any case, it's just that there won't be official builds of Firefox on Win9x anymore, nothing to stop anyone forking the codebase to maintain a functional Win9x build (IMO waste of time, but ho-hum). The SeaMonkey guys are doing this just fine for now ever since Mozilla decided to EOL the Mozilla Suite post Gecko 1.7.x.

Re: Visual Confirmation
Some people have older computers that do not meet the system requirements for XP, like my friend with 32MB of RAM :pthe_dan wrote: There is no bit reason to not be using Windows XP or 2000, to be entirely honest. Then it's new PC time. You can pick up a computer that will run Win2k or XP for about £50, if you look around probably.Twillingate.info wrote:Some people have older computers that do not meet the system requirements for XP, like my friend with 32MB of RAM :pthe_dan wrote: There is no bit reason to not be using Windows XP or 2000, to be entirely honest.
