No. Not-so-intelligent people shouldn't create boards with any stable or not stable version of board software, because they cannot create good boards. Only intelligent people creates good discusion boards. And there is too many bad boards...
Damn right... Too many crappy boards around these days!

They should build in a IQ tester at installment that will flush out the most n-s-i people

this really annoys me when people rant about "2 years"

1) you try making something this big in under that in your free time
2) its free, and its good quality - no right to complain, if you want something else quicker, go pay for it elsewhere
3) remeber developers don't spend all there time coding 3.0, there is still 2.0.x to support.
4) developers don't make money from this, therefore they need jobs - less time to code
5) even if they didn't have jobs, do you really expect them to spend all there free time on this?
6) for example: IPB get money, and I believe this pre beta version, with some features not yet added has more features. Not so sure about vbullitin, but i expect it to be the same case.

another little annoyance with the "2 years" rant is that it had actually been a little over 4...

lets see you make something this great
TwistedWeather wrote: Sorry but no matter how anyone wants to explain it that is terrible. I know of no other bb developers who produce that slow who as well do it for FREE. And their products arent buggy either.
phpBB is free. products arent buggy at all- its just new exploits are found at times, which happens by other bbs as well.
overall phpBB gets bugged because to many people add to many modifications.
TwistedWeather wrote: Its a shame too because it is leaving phpbb way WAY behind the rest and WAY outdated as well.
oh? is that so? so what is new then- the typical OOP and AJAX functions? way outdated, oh puhlieze.
TwistedWeather wrote: My gut says it is not even close to being ready either by the endless it will be ready when it's ready replies. Which btw i believe replies like that by admins/developers and staff is in bad taste. Doesnt leave much confidence in people with intrest in your product here. Timelines i admit stink but when your trying to put out a product to the public timelines are expected. FREE or not.
i for one am still interested in phpBB- and so are a lot with me. quality > rushed product
TwistedWeather wrote: This forum does look good btw. A HUGE improvement over the 2.0+ series.
thats normal with a new version.
TwistedWeather wrote: Sorry about my ranting. Just felt this needed to be said.
i think i speak for others here as well. just dont rant. nobody cares whether or not you think phpBB sucks or not. dont like it? go use something else.

If I could contact you before you created this thread, I would have warned you about these hoity toity boyz, the phpBB fanclub kids.

They are either obsessed with phpBB, or they are trying to look good to the devs like little boyz... If 2 more years had passed after today and still with no release of beta, they'd still tell you you don't have a right to complain and that they are waiting for a quality product bla bla.

Not too hard to understand after a while why these boyz can't take it when a phpBB user says the obvious... The wait was indeed long, but they will never accept it, so don't waste your time here. ;)

That's because as a free product, there is no right to complain. I've been waiting for cacti 0.9 to be released for about two years, and it's frustrating that it hasn't been, but they do have other jobs as well. Yes, it's frustrating that the developers can't get things done faster, but that's one of the perils of software development in general. Vista, for example, is now two years and change behind original schedule, and Vienna (formerly known as Blackcomb), and plenty of people have the right to complain about that, since they've been paying Microsoft for the Software Assurance out of their corporate software budgets on the basis of expecting updates every two years. Yet I know of few IT people that are doing serious complaining.

It really does come down to this: If you can't get what you want in a given software package, go look for alternatives. There are plenty of other bulletin board packages available, and most of them are free. Some of them are, in fact, quite good. I'm sticking with phpBB -- and have planned to do so for some time -- primarily for the new permissions system, which so far as I am aware is not available to this level of detail elsewhere.
You can never go home again... but I guess you can shop there.

For those complaining its taking too long: If they like to take their time, so be it, its their project.

For those complaining about the complainers: They have a good point... Its been a very long time, I think we all expected it a bit sooner. I think there is right to gripe a little.

For those who think they are smart saying "you try making your own and see how long it takes": Ok. I am building my own CMS, with fully intergrated forum system, so you could say, its more work than phpBB. And its no lite package either, its going to be fully featured in all the aspects of a CMS. Lets see, I stared December 05', and I predict to have beta by september (before Im off to college). So thats One dev, fully featured system, 9 months, give or take from zero to beta. I may go over my projected date, but whoopty doo, its still not going to take me over a year.

Now Im not saying Im superman, or that the devs are lazy, on the contrary, The devs work at their own pace. They code when they want to. I might want to more often, (I cant have more time mind you.. one persons spare time compared to how many?). The balance of working by yourself and making all the decisions and working in a team so you have more total time/brains is pretty much even.

my $0.02: It has taken to long, In my opinion. In the developers opinion it has not. Thats fine. Its not quite fair you gang up on the people who think its overdue, infact they are the people you want, they are anxious and ambitious, they are excited about phpBB! Also most of them have already left this place, because they obviously arnt going to wait for the software ;) . I myself will continue using phpBB 2.0.x then my own forum that is built into the CMS I am developing (and I will probably make a standalone of the fourm aswell). Why no 3.0.0 in there? Because I dont expect that it will be released (not beta) before I have mine in a stable state

Quite the opposite. We said many many times that we think it took too long (sometimes there were only a few code changes in a month). But most of it were because of personal issues which were not foreseeable.

But this has been discussed more than once. It seems like people are just copying what other users said instead of reading what the actual developers posted, taking everything for granted what a single person writes about development instead of reading what the development team really said.
