The resaon why someone wants phpbb is not because it has hundereds of lil gimnics, fancy stuff etc. included in the core phpbb, but because of the solid programming and the huge comunity which offers many addons so you can built the forum the way you would like to have it.
Well, judging from what I've read about the history of phpBB, they were the trendsetters and other BB's duplicated their features. phpBB v3 is playing catch-up in many respects.

Solid programming is/was never an issue. That's why I'm pushing so hard for phpBB to be more of a trendsetter (or get back to it) when it comes to newer features being added to the core - I don't think other BB's would be able to do it as well.

DigitalShadow wrote: I think the keyword is "discussion" forum. Personaly i don't see how things like RSS, blog, cash points would add to a discussion or even encourage members to post. Especially with the cashmod i saw some boards transform to a "diablo 2 forum", where members where spaming the board and not contributing to get the next item (there are exceptions). They are nice features, thats out of question but i don't think they are needed in the core package.
Putting the cash/points feature to the side for a minute... You don't see how RSS encourage people to post? Wow! It'll encourage people to post because it will bring the topics to them - and draw them to the Board. In an effort not to get too far OT, I won't comment on blogs...

phpBB 2 was, I think, a trend-setting PHP package, and subSilver was (rightly) a large part of the shock and awe.

Compare phpBB 2 to the feature sets of the feature rich Perl boards of the day, like Ikonboard 3 and YaBB 1, to see it in context.

 Well, then I'm still missing your point. phpBB 2 didn't even support attachments!

I thought you were saying phpBB was trend-setting...

My point is this... phpBB was a trend-setter, unless the topics that I read about the history of phpBB were wrong - But now they are playing catch-up in some respects. I would like for them to get back to the trend-setting.

It's not like I'm going anywhere... I love the community - but still...

Just by virtue of having been around longer, the Perl coders held the edge over the PHP coders. At the time, among the open source and free PHP boards, a product like Phorum was among the more mature (and it remains a solid product).

I see your point, thought i am still skeptical. It is a nice feature, but I have my doubts that members will be more encouraged to post and reply because they get the topics to them, if they were not very productive before that. That doesn't mean i do not hope to be wrong on this.

That it would be great to see phpbb as a trendsetter is without question. But doing the same things other BBs do won't give phpBB that status (back?) in my opinion.
((perfect timing-_-, i wasnt able to log in this weekend cuz Dad thinks this site is bad and that your all the spawn of Satan....hmm go figure^_^))

There's already a trend of feature bloat, it's an aspect of nearly every (i hesitate to say "all") peice of software out there that's matured and stable.

Adding feature bloat to phpbb won't help it set new trends.

Here here. I don't think much more should be incorperated into phpBB. I have nothing against these mods (in fact most are pretty cool). But you won't see them on my site for a number of reasons
  • It would make it harder to upgrade to 3.0
  • The bigger ones take time and alot of work to add, and even then if you screw something up you can end up spending hours repairing it!
  • Most users of my forum (and most forums) don't want to be bombarded with features, they just want to post! If you bombard them with features they get scared and don't want to visit as much :D
    [\list]

I certainly think that this version shouldn't get any more features. I don't want it to become bloated! You'll end up with people modding to remove features (and then you get... phpBB3 lite... dear god no!)

    Cheers,
