No it is not planned within 3.x. However I believe however im sure it will make an enterance sometime in the future.. Possbily 3.2? No-one knows

We want to have a perfectly working 3.0 without any AJAX. Once we have that, it is easy to set dynamic interfaces on top of the current one for 3.2 - allowing users to decide whether they want to use it or not, and ensuring compatibility with as many browsers as possible, including the one in your cellphone.
If the developers would start developing AJAX interfaces now, the basic ones would suffer and there would be no decent fallback.

The best purpose of AJAX in a forum would in my eyes be a "save draft every 30. second"-function, just like GMail does it. That would be a revolution to the forum-world.. How many times have you lost a post because something craches? I do it all the time...
