Forums are for talking with well, thought out, posts, not for chatting. If you want to chat, go get MSN, AIM, YIM, GTalk, etc. Or you can go to various chatrooms around the web.
And if you don't like phpBB3, then go ahead and pay for the "better" stuff. IMO, IPB and vB aren't really that great. I like vB's UCP, but now phpBB has a better one. So yeah, why pay when you can get something free, and then develop the mods yourself.
Of course, I'm not trying to sound mean or offensive, but that's just my opinion.
Cheers!
This is my same concern/reason for phpBB. Seriously, Olympus is a huge upgrade from what I've seen and the fact that it's free only plays my card more. I have looked at and used the other 'competitors' and they just can't beat the community here...or the price.
I've been tinkering with phpBB for a couple years now and agree that MODs could be a bit easier to install and use. It's just another reason Olympus is going to be such an improvement with it's modular system.
This is looking so promising. I can't wait for the final release!
since I've been snooping around in the 2.0.x code, and gotten familiar with it, I can easily make mods for myself as needed. Thats another reason I like phpBB. And I s'pect I'll get used to the 3.0 whenever the code is stable and final (at least RC or BETA at earliest is when I'll start looking and testing it out).
After reading through this thread, i'm going to have to disagree to those whom believe that IPB 2 is a better board than PHPBB 3.
I've always been a major fan of phpBB myself, every time I decide to use IPB for a small project it ends up to be a disaster. Why? Because skinning is a big pain in the ass, the modifications are much harder to install (coming from someone who is working on a mod himself) and the board is a lot less user friendly. The support is completly bogus and there is not a lot of community discussion.
Oh, did I mention the pesky fee?
Now, lets sum up PHPBB compared to IPB.
Fast, easy mod installments, templates are probably the easiest things to work with, the community is just better, faster help, and a better looking board..
Oh yeah..
Did I mention... Free?
Overall, I find phpBB to be a better bulletin board than IPB can ever hope to be.

Much <3 phpBB... Much <3...
I totally agree. I just wonder why anyone would want to use anything OTHER than phpBB.

I must admit that I sneaked over at the ipb and vBulletin sites. But paying for something that might be slightly better than phpBB is just odd. You get the most features phpBB does not have built-in with the help of MODs. Sure, not every MOD has the same high quality and might be buggy first but we've seen some great stuff here.
My concerns are that the update frequency in phpBB 3.x will be higher because of the implemented features. The Attachment MOD is updated almost every month e.g.
But I don't care, with "patch" it's just a couple of minutes and with a vanilla 3.x it should run smoothly.
