i dont know i dont have either in my computer. i dotn even know what kind of chips apple puts in its computers.
Re: AMD or Pentium
AMD Athlon 64s as what I primarily do is gaming, and Athlons are known to be better in gaming rigs. Next to that the athlon has much less power usage aswell.

Re: AMD or Pentium
Lets put it this way. Sure, a P-M is great, but a C-M is like having a Ferrari with a Skoda engine. It just won't work the same way as a normal Ferrari. Basically a Celeron processor generally has half the L1 cache and no L2 cache, of which most things you do will benifit from having both as large as possible.Teddy B. wrote: Unless you mean a Celeron M. The Celeron M used in many notebooks is actually based on the same core as the Pentium M. And the P-M has been proven in many cases to have better performance than the Pentium 4.
Video and Audio editing are deep-pipeline processes, and are what is defined as perdictable processing. Since they are deep-pipeline, you're looking at using a Pentium 4, since they have a 31 stage pipeline, and thus will absolutly kill *any* AMD at video encoding. (If you don't belive me, a P4 2.8 GHz will only be 5-10% slower than a Athlon 64 X2 4200+ in TMPGEnc encoding - something that is wholy attributed to the pipeline of the CPU)rockstarhs wrote: Well....i am about to built a new pc this month. i need it for video and audio editing.i am between amd 3500 and pa 3.4. hmmm which will suit me better?
As for my prefrence? Currently I'm runninng a 3GHz P4 (Northwood core) at 3.7GHz. It knocks the socks off of anything I throw at it, from video encoding to games, all while doing it with low temperatures (currently idle, its 29c, and under full load it peaks at 48c). Since the system was free (I've made a few upgrades in terms of RAM, HD's and a new case), my choice is simple. However, if I ever upgrade, unless Intel drops the prices, I'll probibally go for an AMD; but I don't see me upgrading for another few years, so we shall see then...
P.s. If anyone needs me to clarafiy or expand on the above, do ask. I'll be happy to give a small lesson in the ways of a CPU

Re: AMD or Pentium
Intel P4, any day.
Firstly, they generate 4 times as much heat per square inch as an iron, so especially in these winter months it helps to keep you warm!
It also runs slower, making you stay on your computer for longer and at less of a risk of catching a cold!
Oh yeah, and it gets so hot the fans drown your music but keep the inside of your case free from dust because it vacuum-cleans it out.
Hmm, and it also guzzles electricity. (Now how to put a positive spin on that? :S)

Re: AMD or Pentium
I derive much pleasure watching the competition, plus the competition has provided us some very good choices and great performance. Over the years I have purchased and built more Pentium systems than AMD and feel a little partial, but have to admit that both AMD and Pentium systems are great systems. Compared to decades ago, it is absolutely amazing what we can do with our systems and networks today...

Did you mean pentium 4? Because if your seriously asking that question, dont build a pc yourself, lol.
Re: AMD or Pentium
I am a brand unbiased overclocker. I factor many things into my CPU:
1.) Cost of the processor
2.) Upgradability (platform still supported, what do I need to upgrade to support and overclock the CPU to its potential, cost of other compents needed to make the upgrade happen)
3.) Overclockability
If the performance of the CPU when overclocked to as much as I can get it to is outstandingly good for the price, that ends up being my CPU.
Currently, I am using an AMD Athlon XP 1700+ It is an 0310 XPMW Tbred B core. I got it for much less than a hundred bucks (payed a bit more to get this specific chip), and at the time, when overclocked beat just about everything else out there in most general uses.
I have considered some Intel's and the new Cedar Mill's look like they overclock very nicely, but then again, so do the socket 939 AMD Opteron's for about half the price...so I am not sure what my next processor would be. If I plunked down money for one right now, it would be a close one, but I am trying to make my 1700 last as long as possible. 8) 8)

Re: AMD or Pentium
My first computer was a Celeron, with Windows ME. It sucked. I learnt my lesson, therefore, i have bought an AMD SEMPRON with Windows XP.
AMD WHAT, AMD WHAT, AMD BABY
