Metaphorically, milestone is used to denote reaching an identifiable stage in completion of something other than a physical journey, as in project management, world events, and the like.

The key being project management, i.e. in terms of management of 3.0 development, we've hit the third milestone.

There used to be a public document saying there were going to be 4 milestones, however that seems to have disappeared. How many there are now I don't know, but at least it's an indication that we are closer.
