Not everybody had agreed, but the security review for 2.0.x is of considerable value for the installed base which will exist for a period of time and getting that more stable/secure improves not only the perception and reliability of phpBB on servers, but also fosters a very positive atmosphere for the installed base if fixes are indeed made and updates applied to the many forums currently in existence. The added benefit and side effect may even help free up the developers to focus on 3.0 if others help "clean up" the old, which the developers have consumed a considerable amount of time on (appears or seems to be the case). But complementary and of real value IMO is also to help focus on embedding and integrating good security review processes for 3.0 (the methods and people and processes ultimately also for 3.0) and coding practices for 3.0 using lessons learned from 2.0.* reviews and security "fixes". Improving the security in the old and applying what can be applied to 3.0 is mutually beneficial and a very good thing IMO.
Will it take a little more time? Most likely and we'll see. But will it be worth it? I have no doubt. Over the decades I have preached reliability, stability, and security (in the general and specific operational sense) always trump features and performance. So I'd vote to lay the foundation well now as desired and needed even if it means further delay. So getting the extra support personnel for some of these type things is good and would have been beneficial over a year ago IMO to help flush out some of the early and potential problems, but that is water under the bridge, and devs' circumstances simply may not have allowed or permitted it as they have explained and noted in numerous posts (because of personal problems, work loads, etc.), but maybe the "log jam" is breaking lose a little and others can begin to contribute a little more in new and various ways (as many support-team members do now)...
I surely feel that the beta could easily come this year; time will tell...
Release date?

Re: Release date?
The problem is that there aren't enough developers, and they won't bring any more on board because they think it will take too much time. I wonder if they thought that a few years back.
Re: Release date?
This may sound unrealistic but I think the security review for the 2.0.x series will actually speed up development of a "releasable" 3.0 since development will (whichever way you look at it) take the findings of the security review into account and probably avoid some redesigning during the Beta stages.
As for the release date, it hasn't changed at all.

Procrastination is my hobby, but I keep on postponing it.
Re: Release date?
I've just read threw this whole thing & the only official responce was a guess of a year ago.
I adore phpBB and the phpBB team, it's very very good & free whats more but..
I really can't wait much longer for the next major release!
The invisionfree stuff is getting so advanced now it's almost tempting to put up with their lame servers =P
Please give us an update & realistic guess
Please no fan-boy "it's done when it's done" remarks, y'know ur dieing for the answer just as much as I am!

Re: Release date?
That's not being a fanboy, that's telling the absolute truth. We have no idea when it will be done. The developers have no idea when it will be done. Giving you an artificial date would be lying.Jayce wrote: Please give us an update & realistic guess![]()

Use whatever forum best suits your purpose and needs, whether that be phpBB or invisionFree, or IPB, or vB, or ___
Re: Release date?
Truly I will wait 3 years or even my whole life to see this code done.
I won't go and get a free half-product. This board is a guideline for every coders and it's also already a great product.
There's something money can't buy... good coding talent, perfectionism, innovative ideas. This is what this board give you and for free. I could say... if you're not happy with it; code the parts that you need to be done or start yourself another forum; you will see how much work it takes. So for all developpers and people involved in this project i say: don't lose your inspiration

Re: Release date?
Ok these threads just go on and on...
Firstly 1.5 developers in an really negative point of veiw, I think it is 2.5, to say that Paul has stopped working on the project, is just stupid, absolutely idiotic... AcydBurn is working on the project... And bartVB has made a couple of additions...
This community still dosen't get the message... Stop yelling about the release date... Go and do something constructive... Get over it, serious, get over it... It will be released when it is, no amount of ranting and raving will ever change that... The developers made a mistake by not taking on more devs earlier in the project (in my eyes) but the events that have caused this to string out where both anaviodable and unforseeable (shutup I hate english)...
Ok that's my rant, I beleive that the developers are doing an amazing job... If you want to pay for them to become full time dev's let them know I'm sure they'll be glad for you to suplement their current annual salary...

Re: Release date?
"1.5 developers" is just a figure of speech. It meant more before the recent development team roster prune because it focused on the active number of developers versus the apparent size of the team.
As a figure of speech, it also points out that nobody codes phpBB full time anymore.
The whole idea was and is to say that the team of active developers isn't a big as some people think it is. phpBB is a very large project (a non-trivial script package, two websites, support, etc.) handled by a relatively small number of active people.

Re: Release date?
Yup.. figures.. Fanboys
Theres nothing wrong with asking for a new guesstimate after this amount of time.

Re: Release date?
I just wish some one would say: "it is not coming out this year.. No beta.. No alpha........."
I am faithful user of phpBB and will continue even after it take 6-12 more months.. I just want it done right.
