rob30UK: Ofcourse it looks like that... The updatescript is probably already done (are very far)...
But to keep the nwbies from 'upgrading' there stable phpBB2 instalation to the very unstable CVS of phpBB3 (not much of an upgrade, that) the update script is probably kept private... until beta's here, that is ;)

For the rest... awell... just wait until beta is announced... no need in trying to push the devs... I think youll have more luck in pushing mount Everest ;)

I think a beta date of March is a tad optimistic considering the amount of CVS check-ins lately... Unless that is just to fool us into thinking they aren't working on it?

However, I think development has slowed due to their life outside the project.

The Sourceforge CVS is probably not the primary CVS. It's just what the public gets to see.

There is a upgrade.php and update_script.php in the CVS. Nothing is kept private (well almost nothing ;) ).

Are you sure about this? I've read this several times in these forums, however, I think I remember someone from the team posting that there is no such thing as a private CVS.
I think, the only reason why there sometimes is a phase where nothing seems to happen, is, that the devs are working on new features on their private PCs and only checking in files that at least somewhat work. I think there was a great loss of work some time age because the PC of one of the devs was stolen... Since there were no backups, I guess there is no private CVS.

I'm pretty sure. Yes, one of the devs lost some data for a while when a system was stolen, but I believe he got it back. However, data may be committed to a private CVS when something is baffling and someone wants someone else to look at it, and then sporadically released to the public when it's deemed to be stable enough. Look at the features that are available here and not in the SF CVS (not as many anymore, but some are there). It makes sense to have a separate CVS (or at least a separate archive of the CVS) to handle that code.

Hm, seems logical. After reading your post, I also can't imagine them working without a private CVS. Perhaps the post that I remembered just had the intention of saying "nothing is being kept under wraps, everything is committed as it is ready".

It would seem to me there has to be a private cvs and I would suspect private testing board/s the devs use before making updates here. The main reason I think they have a few secrets is that it would be to their benefit to drop some nice features on the group with the beta release to create a big buzz when the code finally does come out to play. Also there is the matter of competitors who have hired coders developing products that surely watch developements here closely for innovations they can incoprorate into their own products. Wouldnt seem very prudent to lay all of your cards on the table only to watch others be first to market with your ideas now would it?
