phpBB doesn't mind plain PHP image signatures, though! I don't see why the need for all that.

I've heard before that the board stats signatures can cause a decent amount of load, if you're using the one that accesses the database every time the image is loaded. A better approach would be to modify the script to store board stats in a text file that updates once every hour or so, or have it make an image and save it, then update it every so often(sort of like a cache).
Not once have I seen it work on phpBB 2.0.11.
It used to work, but stopped suddenly due to a bug fix(phpbb tightened security on that bbcode tag). The sexiest solution now is to use mod_rewrite. :)
