Drop support for Firebird

Post by Noxwizard »

The Firebird DBMS is our least used and most poorly supported database system. I only recall two instances of a user requesting support on Firebird. The PHP module isn't very robust either, it is possible to crash Apache while attempting to connect to a Firebird database. Due to a bug in PHP PDO Firebird module, we can't natively test it with PHPUnit and have to use a custom ODBC wrapper to run tests.

I think time would be better spent on other things than maintaining this DBAL driver.

Definitely agree. Considering the problems it has, it doesn't seem likely anyone is seriously using it for phpBB anyway.

And we can add that only firebird does not support the datetime type (if i'm not wrong) and it's a problem for some features (especially for the custom profile fields)

It's too little used to be worth the maintenance.

Above message may contain errors in grammar, spelling or wrongly chosen words. This is because I'm not a native speaker. My apologies in advance.
