Impact on <i> can override. Otherwise, we go back to the old markup with many items in the markup to create a simple button.

I do not understand what you are saying here? you mean using !important? also who is talking buttons? you are narrowing the scope again.

in order to hide text appropriately while still allowing for them on screen readers without affecting the icon, a span wrap is absolutely required.
