phpBB 3.1 Demo System

Post by Pony99CA »

Would it be possible to set up a phpBB 3.1 demo system like the phpBB 3.0 Demo at phpBB.com? That would allow people to automatically create a temporary board to see the MCP and ACP without having to download the development code and set up a test board (they can see the user side of it here).

I think that would be very useful.

At this stage of development, you want something that will be so yesterday?

Take a few minutes of your own time to setup locally.

We can even make it update automatically by mirroring changes made to area51.

well area51 is not updated automatically. But I guess it shouldnt be too much work to set it up.

As for the composer stuff, just unzip my attachment and move the files and folders into phpBB/vendor/ so that you have phpBB/vendor/autoload.php

I'm not quite sure what that means. If you mean that phpBB 3.1 is a moving target, I presume that the demo would be kept up-to-date as phpBB 3.1 evolved (even if it were only updated when Area 51 was updated, that might still be good enough).

That violates what I call my "timeliness principle" -- if my doing something in X time saves X+d time for everybody else, it's worth it for me to do. If I were the only one interested in this, I agree that I should just download it. But...

In about three days, we've already gotten four people (myself included) interested. If you publicized it on phpBB.com, I bet that you'd get a lot more.

But that's why I brought it up for discussion -- to guage the level of interest and see how hard it would be to do. If it would take weeks to do, or I were the only person interested, forget about it. If it takes hours to do and a few people are interested, it might be worth it (especially if it could be done by people outside of the Developer team -- maybe the Website team; I don't want to distract the developers from finishing 3.1 :D).
