Math equations (with latex)

Post by viniciusharlock »

Hello there,

For scientific discussions it's would be really useful to write short equations using latex code inside a message, and have them converted to pics (preferably png).
Surely latex is not the usual thing to run on a server or web hosting.
Unfortunately I'm not optimistic that I'll succeed with that myself.
So perhaps someone here likes the idea.

Did we just travel back in time 6 years or did you copy that text almost verbatim? :?

To be honest I don't understand the question because the document you've linked at contains the solution ;)
If you're using phpBB3, then no mod is even needed. Just click Postings from the Administrator Control Panel, and add the custom BBCode [tex]{TEXT}[/tex] with the HTML replacement <img src="/cgi-bin/mimetex.cgi?{TEXT}" align=middle>

Currently I use

Code: Select all

src="http://l.wordpress.com/latex.php?latex={TEXT}&bg=E1EBF2&s=1" <img align=middle>
But how to install latex on a web hosting? How to change the background?

Hi,

obviously it's a PERL script. You need that mimetex.cgi and you need access to your cgi-bin directory, e.g. to the location where PERL scripts can be executed.

But I'm not sure whether every provider will give you the access you need.

If you have your own server, or access at least, a full LaTeX implementation isn't very large. Mimetex, also by John Forkosh, offers an inferior solution to mathtex. For one thing, you can specify .png output, instead of funky .gif... ;)

I have mathtex installed on my server, called the same way that mimetex is, but since it uses your local TeX installation, you can include other macro packages, like chemtex.

This example comes from one of my members:

Code: Select all

[tex]\gammacorrection{3.5} \usepackage{chemtex}\setlength{\unitlength}{0.1pt}\steroid{Q}{Q}{$HO$}{}{Q}{M}{$C(CH_3)H(CH_2)_3C(CH_3)_2H$}{Q}{Q}[/tex]
gives us:

We will help you install phpBB, anything else is outside the scope of this forum.
