Update:

It has now been well over 24 hours since I installed the new captcha software and not one spammer has managed to register. I even temporarily removed my .htaccess file in order to test out the new captcha's effectiveness.

I was looking at who's online in the wee small hours of this morning and observed several known spambots who had previously registered several times in the last few days, trying to register again without success.

So, not only is the new captcha software doing it's job, but it just goes to show that the default captcha has indeed been compromised and is easy for spambots to defeat.

Nick (and all first time MOD installers),
One thing that is not made very clear is that you need to open ALL of the xml files in with the MOD since they each may have specific instructions. I made that mistake with this MOD in particular and started whining about not being able to see the effects on the Registration Panel - complete operator error. The templates folder has the instructions to change the html files.

My god, I hate sites that use those crappy captchas. Soon as I see those I just leave.

I can see that captcha's can be annoying, but better that than some spammer posting porn on my site. ;)

I regularly update my htaccess file, but of course with the amount of spambots out there, it's impossible to stop them all in that way.

In over 12months I had only ever had 3 spammers register, until recently, when all of a sudden the spam registrations went though the roof. This was totally unacceptable to me and is the reason I installed the new captcha software, which appears to work just fine.

I have quite a few old(er) people registering for my board and the only way they can read the captcha is to make it so simple monkeys can read it and that's where I get into problems - lots of monkeys signing up. I need those questions like, "Are you a human? Are you sure? Oh yeah? If you're a human what color is your hair?"

Nick, I'm no expert, but the Prime_Anti-Bot MOD seems better than the Anti-Spam MOD, and instructions are easily found in the root folder. Install.xml viewed in your brower gives clear instructions. Hope that helps.

Yes, I know what you mean mate, as I have quite a lot of older members on my forums too.

The new captcha software I installed uses pictures, rather than text and therefore is easier for people to see, but harder for spambots to break.

If you'd like to go and check it out, here is a link to my site. Just click register/I agree and you will see the new captcha I installed. Obviously you don't actually have to register, unless of course you wanted lol.

For the time being I've disabled ALL new accounts. I hate to do that, but hay... the spam bots are driving me crazier than I already am. I may just post an image on my main site page saying registrations will only be allowed between 12:00 and 1:00 PM for my time zone for a while and if the people really want in then can do it then. I'll pass on the MODs and code changing. I also have a lot of older users so its tough enough to register as is.

Also this hit and miss being able to stay logged in is also becoming a pain in the rear. Anyone know what is causing it?

There is a phpBB2 MOD I don't recall the name though that's used the same way to stop those spambots.
That code I implemented it years ago also in my 'IP Country Flag MOD for phpBB2' that I use at my phpBB2 demo-board, no spambots there since ages.

That's why I wrote the same for phpBB3, you can find it here: http://gold.io3di.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=94 .. at my phpbb3 demo-board, later on today I will put it also there into my board's files, I'm too lazy to do that immediately.

Tested on phpbb 3.0.4 localhost, though.

Regards.
Some user PMed me about this MOD of mine. They had read their logs and confirmed all of those bots are using TimeZone -12, since I have implemented also this MOD of mine into my board I have no spambots registering now.

Feel free to try it out and report, here or there at my demo-board where it is installed/supported: http://gold.io3di.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=94

Thank you. :)

P.s.: this MOD will be improved based on your feedback. :geek:
