How to restrict access to memberships/usergroups?

i just found that membergroups are linked with user profiles ?

so in order to restrict access to usergroups, you have to restrict access to profile, is there anyway to separate them ?

ie
access profiles
no access group lists

they just have to be closed groups… that way people can't let themselves in.
I don't know the exact details on it, but users can't just walk into any group they want without approval.
