Who knows? Time will tell.
They won't be made by phpBB developers. But if there is need for them, I guess the community will do them.

An alternative is to convert it to phpBB2 (if a converter exists) and then from 2 to 3.

phpBB2 without addons does not support many of the features that WBB2 allows (e. g. subforums or additional profile fields), so a direct converter to phpBB3 would be the better option.

Have you ever seen phpBB3's import/convert user interface and plug-in system? Doesn't sound like it.

There is a screenshot posted by one of the team members awhile back of the converter, but, with a list of other packages, as well as phpBB2, to convert from. Things like IPB and vBulletin, etc.

I couldn't find it in my search however. Maybe someone else will manage to dig it up.

Actually, there is an official one, it just hasn't been released because it's undergoing work still (and we don't intend to release it until a later point in the process)
