how does server protocol work?

Post by b3rx »

i have read this in the acp but how does it work? does it only work in the acp or it could also work in the entire forum?
Server protocol:
This is used as the server protocol if these settings are forced. If empty or not forced the protocol is determined by the cookie secure settings (http:// or https://)

Thats only if you have a forum on SSL.
If you dont know what it is then ignore it.

If you don't know what you're doing, and if you don't really need SSL, then turn it off and leave the protocol for what it is.
Using SSL is not just turning a switch to ON. you need a certificate and more of that crap.

'It' as in phpBB or your browser?

If its your browser then it could be a image loading from the http:// version.

what do you mean http:// version? yes its in the browser. I use firefox and when im in acp the address bar has a color yellow and there is a lock icon at the lower right corner of the browser. but when im browsing the forum, sometimes if the forum is still loading, the address bar is in yellow but when the entire page loads, its no longer in yellow and the lock icon has a strike through meaning its not secured anymore. any ideas?

http:// is unencrypted
https:// is encrypted (ssl)

This can be related to a users avatar, which is loaded from a different server via http:// (unencrypted), for example. Or a [IMG] in a post.

Yep with SSL everything the browser loads has to be encrypted.
Thats why its best not to run a forum under SSL unless absolutely nessasary.
