I've been wanting a AJAX forum for some time.
I'll do it on Olympus if I can find enough time.

I'm thinking something like GMail except replacing the e-mail with threads.
No page reloading as you browse the forums.

BAD IDEA

VERY VERY VERY BAD IDEA

My browser has a perfectly good back button... why do I not want it to work?

In fact if AJAX was used in the way you said above it wouldnt.. I believe AJAX has its place, this place is in speeding up form processing and searching come to mind off the top of my head, but I dont think a forum would benefit from having everything AJAXed up.

There is a trick to allow the back/forward buttons to still work.

Moving the template system in to Javascript and only transfering the post and user data would make a massive difference to speed.

Plus it has a really cool "WOW!" factor. ;)

I'd like to see Ajax in a) edit-in-place and b) checking if your username already exists.

There is an excellent (yet very complex) mod for phpBB 2 that does just this.

A "trick", to just simply get something to work to it's NORMAL expectation.

Great design.
(No, seriously... think about that. WOW Factor is not greater than useability)
