Why didn't they just use the 'built-in' session-method of php ?
I know the devs are using their own script since the first version of phpbb, I was just asking why

The data of the sessions is stored in the databese. You have access to all sesion data (who is online uses this). Also some very small amount of people migh have disabled php sessions.
Don't give me my freedom out of pity!
