Are there any updates about this? This feature would be really useful to the Notifications system, instead of notifying users by quoting them.

No offense but it doesn't work great for everyone, and a number of people have complained that it straight up killed their board. I highlighted the reasons it performs so poorly on the main site. I would recommend to wait until those are fixed.

Yeah it works fine on most smallish boards. Doesn't slow my board down too much. Just a small clan website so yeah, but if it was bigger then I would have done more load test to see how bad it would be.

With @Mentions:
Page generated in 0.2663 seconds with 24 queries + 8 queries returning data from cache

Time spent on mysqli queries: 0.01642s | Time spent on PHP: 0.24986s

Without:

Page generated in 0.1423 seconds with 24 queries + 7 queries returning data from cache

Time spent on mysqli queries: 0.01578s | Time spent on PHP: 0.12651s

So yeah your mileage may vary :)

By "main" you mean index? I also think the questionable approach of checking events could be improved vastly.

To resume:

- A new [mention][/mention] bbcode
- A new popup-up when you start writing @ after a space if you are in WYSIWYG mode
- @mention parsed automatically when the post is submitted (with a checkbox and an option to disable it, like for the smileys)

The ability to mention users in a thread or post is specific, so it represents the BBCode "[mention]Nicofuma[mention]" or use "@Nicofuma" when submitted it will trigger a notification sent to the user.

So what I think this is an extension or in 3.1.4?

This will not be in any 3.1 release, as stated several times in this topic. There is an extension for 3.1 that is also mentioned in this topic so if you want to have this functionality now then that will be the way to go.

The possibility to mention someone in a topic is of vital importance to the Notification system.....
It should be included by default as not everybody even knows there is an extension for this.
The extension is only developed and maintained by one phpbb enthusiast and the development seems to go very slow.
I believe the phpbb dev team should at least join in to maintain the extension.... When they are sure that they got the best way to do it, maybe they can merge it in the core.....
