[RFC] drag and drop image insertion

Post by sajaki »

In the github commenting system you can drag a png image to the posting area and it will automatically be uploaded to a cloud and inserted in the post. Something similar could be done for phpbb and you would end up with a [img]url[/img] in your post without having to do the browse / insert into post procedure.

it isn't drag and drop. it's click-> browse -> find it in your OS -> select -> open -> click in post -> click embed. 5 clicks compared to one select/drag.

The only thing that's probably missing is inserting the [attachment] bbcode to place the file inline. I'm pretty certain that there is a ticket requesting this already, although I seem unable to find it now. This was actually requested prior to the new uploader getting merged, but I decided to postpone it in order to avoid making the PR larger.

In my opinion, drag and drop takes as many steps as the conventional way. You still have to browse on your machine to locate the file. A bit off topic, I admit :D

Is it? I updated to 3.1.0 B3 and it seems that I'm not able to drag image to posting area. Maybe it is some bug in my system, but it was working before (it's couple of weeks I tried it last time, so I don't know on what version of phpBB 3.1.0 I tested it).

Then it must be some problem with my browser. It seems it works with IE 11, but not with Firefox Portable 29.0.1. Do I need to install some plugin to use this feature?

You need to be in the full editor.
Then drag the file to the posting window, and the upload should start in the attachment tab.

Calling it drag and drop is a little bit of a stretch, compared to what I think you could expect today.
But it is an improvement to what we have in 3.0 for sure.
