Again please forgive this self-described PHP non-expert, but isn't includes/constants.php the proper place to define the constant. What about those few phpBB debug messages? Did you find them in your error logs or on the main screen after installation? On the screen during the installation process, in yellowish banner. At the time I didn't check if there was anything further in the server logs. I've checked now and didn't find...
