You will find that $_SESSIONS is never used in decent software. Mainly because it wont scale easily. With phpBB's system if I was to add a 2nd server to speed up my forum I'd just throw it in and it would work. With php's sessions system it would be extremely tricky to get it working. My bet is your using Windows.

Lets just say that phpBB is a lot more secure than Windows and since your happy with Windows then you'll have no problems with phpBB.

Its phpBB's best feature IMHO.

Google Talk also uses the Jabber protocol just so you know.
