That's due to the cache. If you are not in debug mode that's normal. In a production mode a lot of things are done to optimize the application. +1 on the initial proposal: nuke our current DBAL, expose doctrine dbal through a new service and make the service dbal.conn a simple wrapper for the doctrine service (wrapper which will be nuked in 4.0)

php-fpm is a fastcgi SAPI for PHP yes. But if you don't know it means you are not using it
