I would like to see the beta today because I'm quite bored at the moment. However if the devs think they need more time to get things sorted then they can have more time. phpBB 2.0.X is still working well

As I would understand it it is a release which has only small bugs left (if any) and if the candidate is satisfactory it becomes gold.

You can't at the moment because Olympus is still under development. However when it is finished there will be an upgrade script similar to the one in phpBB 2 which will help you with upgrading.

Yes, exactly.
And to stallyon, I repeat my earlier post in this topic. There is no incentive for hosts to turn off register globals because many n00b php coders still use it. A dedicated server is great, but there is no reason ...

Yes you can. I had to change one line to make it work with me because the installer didn't recognise on my server that register globals were off.
