UK newspapers? Questions by a US reporter

I work as a news editor for my university newspaper. We have a circulation of about 20,000. We publish five days a week throughout the academic year. I'm considering studying abroad in the UK for a quarter, and I wonder if any users from the UK would care to enlighten me about the printed news media...

Mozilla Firefox (new name of Firebird) 0.8 is out!

A new version of the browser preview is out, and the Windows version comes with an installer. It was renamed Mozilla Firefox because an open source database was using the name, "Firebird." My plug-ins from Firebird 0.7 (Googlebar and Leech) seem to work prefectly fine with this upgrade, and my bookm...

psoTFX switched to Firebird?

Comparing the recent screenshots psoTFX posted with the pictures he posted a few months ago, it looks like he switched from Internet Explorer to Mozilla Firebird.

Am I correct, psoTFX?

I made the switch about 8 months ago, and I have never looked back. ;)

Re: PHPbb team : you have to catch up with the compition

Its really a personal choice on which one you like better to which one you use. Like the people who buy vbulletin are a bit different but with like invisionboard and phpbb you can get them both for free so u'd go with the one you liked more. At the moment invisionboard are a bit ahead of phpbb in t...

Re: Subforum question

I haven't figured out the left and right id stuff yet :S Every forum has a left and a right id. The left id is the right id of the last forum in that parent category + 1. If that forum contains subforums, the left id of the first subforum is the left id of the parent forum + 1. The right id is the ...

Re: vBulletin possibly infringing the term "BBCode"

I don't think that's a copyright infringement. "BBCode" simply means bulletin board code; vBulletin, phpBB, Invision, Ikon, UBB, etc. are all bulletin board systems. It's more of a generic name for mark up language in BB systems.

If I'm wrong, I welcome corrections. :D

PHP embedded in HTML for AdminCP?

It looks like the developers chose to embedd PHP in HTML for the ACP, instead of using the template system like phpBB 2.0.x did. I was wondering if any of them could elaborate on that decision. Or is it simply faster to embed PHP in HTML for now because things are still under development? Thank you....

Re: How the subforums work

vB 3.0 does not employ a tree structure to store forum categories. Instead, each forum/subforum keeps a comma seperated list of parent forums in a varchar(250) field, and a list of a comma seperated list of child forums in a varchar(250) field. Surely you jest? No, I'm serious. As of vB 3.0 RC 2 (c...

Re: How the subforums work

You best put an Ashe comment too :) I came up with the approach but Ashe was the one who then put the basic code in place. I worship you both. I was taught a lot of tree and linked lists structures in college when I was still a computer science major. They never went over modified preorder trees. W...
