I'm quite willing to pick up the DBAL (at some point in the next few months) at least as it makes interop between symfony and phpBB easier, same with decoupling sessions & auth a bit more which I'm doing at the moment.

I'd appreciate any work that has already been done. ;)

I would say don't show them at all unless you have the correct (moderator) permissions to use them.

Myself, Joas, Erik and others only added a preliminary set of events to get started. It's now up to other people (MOD Authors & Developers of new code) to identify places people might want events.
