Well, there was a time, before phpbb.com displayed the brand new phpBB3 with its flashy prosilver style, that a trivial server manteinance that should have taken no more than a couple of hours lasted 8 days... :D

I don't think anybody who does use phpBB lacks a "it would be SO handy if" list. We all have our own reasons for using or nor using any piece of software. It's great to have options, yes?

When it comes to the PHP 5 discussion, I have to agree with Kellanved. And until I have some assurance from my web hosts that they are comfortable supporting a PHP 5 initiative, then I'm uncomfortable blackmailing them into it.
