you have to upload all the files.
you download the complete package from the downloads page then you unzip it to your computer.
then, using ftp, you upload the complete phpBB3 folder to your server.
then, you go to yourdomain.com/phpBB3/install/
and fill in the blanks with your new database info ...

if you do not have any MODs installed, then there is no reason to update from one version to the next like that.
( if you do have MODs installed then yes, update one version at a time.

1. download the current latest version ( 3.0.4 for now )

dont edit the files in the ACP. use ftp to download the file to your computer and edit it with a text editor and upload it back.

I did what you said and that appears to have corrected my problems including the mysterious page I was getting in the acp. I don't understand a lot of this but was it some kinda hack attempt? Should I be concerned about anything else. That particular game has been on my site for a least a month or ...

if the bots have cracked the default captcha, you can make it harder from within the admi panel.
and/or, create a new required field for registration using the custom profile field section of the admin panel.

you need to check your cookie settings in your admin panel.
make sure that your cookie path is set to /forum and that your script path is set to /forum/
change your cookie name to someting else ( add a number to it ) and test again.
also, make sure you do not have http:// in your domain name ...
