"Plus" and "minus" icons along with the existing text I guess. What's more important is to make it look like a button.

Keep it please, by all means. It has been an established forum feature for a really long time.

Even an active session indicator is better than nothing.

We could recreate the same banner using CSS3 shapes and transform.

Give it CSS classes so anyone can change font properties, background color etc. and leave it to style authors to create unique banners.

It is. I run some SQL queries to update cookie information whenever I transfer a phpBB site, because otherwise I can't enter the admin panel.

The f parameter in the URL appears to be only needed to account for users who are browsing a specific forum and show them in the who is online list of the specific forum.
