Re: [RFC|Merged] Allow customisation of "Board index"

I think the discussion is worth having because it demonstrates once again how resistant phpBB is to change. You're right that phpBB, vBulletin, and Burning Board all use the remnants of the term "bulletin board" in their names, but it's one thing to use it for branding purposes (where it's kind of ...

Re: [RFC|Merged] Allow customisation of "Board index"

phpBB could also use the word gramophone instead of media player , but that wouldn't make it the hippest thing the the world. The word "board" is outdated when referring to forums, and the word "index" makes the user feel like he's in math class. Pointless arguments like these are the reason we are ...

Re: [RFC|Merged] Allow customisation of "Board index"

That's an incorrect definition. A "board" and a "forum" are the same thing, the only difference being that "board" sounds a lot more 1990s.

Re: [RFC|Merged] Allow customisation of "Board index"

What do you think this feature does and why I proposed it and created a pull request? :? Regardless, it's been merged and will be in the 3.1 release. Rename away!

Well, I thought the request was to "allow customization." I propose to do away with the "Board Index" name for good (but also allow ...

Re: [RFC|Merged] Allow customisation of "Board index"

It shouldn't be named "Board Index" to begin with. The name is nerdy and not user friendly. One of the first things I do in every new forum is rename it.

Re: Biggest competition threats to PHPBB forums

It amazes me how many people are ready to jump ship because phpBB doesn't have feature X or Y when most of what is being asked for is already available as MODs/add-ons. Sure it would be nice to include some of these features in core but including everything everyone would want in the core would ...

Re: Biggest competition threats to PHPBB forums

Adding all these unnecessary crap just makes the stuff more complex and steers phpBB away from it's core purpose - to create discussions.

phpBB doesn't create discussions. People create discussions. And social features encourage people to make better discussions. The Internet has changed and is ...

Re: Biggest competition threats to PHPBB forums

If a mobile phone only had the capability to make calls and texts built in, and then the user could download a web browser through an app store (similar to a modification through the customisation database), there wouldn't be any problems. I, for one, get annoyed when mobile phone manufacturers ...

Re: Biggest competition threats to PHPBB forums

phpBB is a bulletin board, not a social network, Q&A site, bug tracker, CMS, blog, or a kitchen sink. Why couldn't this feature just be a MOD/plugin?

Forums are social apps by definition, and forum packages that integrate social features (likes, accomplishments, etc), such as XenForo and IPB ...

Re: Change "0 new messages" display in header

People trying to reinvent the wheel with painfully obvious things like this one is exactly why development slows down. What was the last piece of modern software you've seen that notified you of zero messages? The whole point of a notification is to notify you of messages. The only reason it says 0 ...
