phpBB2 was the editors choice in a belgian magazine where they compared it with some other boards. The only negative point they could come up with was that changing the lay-out wasn't easy and that most of the time you would easely notice it was phpBB

would be stupid not to make a script for it

not only the config file needs to be writeable, but also 3 directorys i think

you can try different snapshots, also the installation tells you what is wrong

Simple, a website can't be made closed source. Once you distribute it the source is out . If you are wondering why on this early stage? For feedback. So people can bring in fresh ideas
